Khartoum, Jan. 27 (SUNA)- Dr. Lam Akol, a candidate for the presidency of the Government of South Sudan (GoSS), from Alliance of the Southern Parties, said that they are contesting the elections with confidence because they enjoy wide support from the public.
adding that they are presenting a reform programme for southern Sudan. Dr. Akol referred to what he described as miserable situation in southern Sudan as well as lack of services, security and of clarity of vision and informing people on the meaning and consequences of the of self -determination in southern Sudan. At a press conference he held Wednesday in the premises of the Alliance of Southern Parties in Khartoum, Dr. Akol said that the elections are very important because they are one of the requirements of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which must be conducted under any circumstances in a view that failure to observe the elections entails serious results that are not for the interest of Sudan. Responding to a question about the fairness of the elections, Dr. Lam Akol said that it is part of the tasks of the National Elections Commission i to guarantee the freedom and fairness of the elections with intensive presence of international and local observers to avert any disorders that might occur. He underlined the importance of agreement between the National Elections Commission and governments to allow all political parties to freely express their views, adding that they are following this issue according to the legal procedures for protecting the freedoms. Dr. Lam Akol referred at the press conference to the final statement issued by the Forum for Dialogue of the Southern Political Parties in last November on the general elections, self-determination referendum, the security situations in southern Sudan, the economic and social development, besides the relations between the South and the North and the political alliance.
