Peacekeeping Soldier killed, three wounded near She'airiya in South Darfur

El-Fasher, Feb. 29 (SUNA) - The joint United Nations and the African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) announced that one of its peacekeeping soldiers was killed Wednesday and three others were injured when their patrol was ambushed by unidentified gunmen near She'airya town in South Darfur State, 90 kilometers north eastern Nyala city, the capital city of the state.

In a brief press release issued Wednesday evening in the UNAMID headquarters in Al-Fasher stated that the visit of Mr. Stephen O'Brien, the British State Minister for the International Development, Wednesday to North Darfur was aimed for inspecting the developments and the situation and to conduct a comprehensive and general evaluation of the humanitarian situation and to decide ways for the transfer from the stage of aid and emergency assistance to the stage of development and early recovery.
Meanwhile, the British State minister and the accompanying delegation were briefed during their visits' to the displaced camp in Abu Shouk by the representatives of the of the displaced on their humanitarian needs and their evaluation of the process of repatriation.
The program of the British minister's visit included holding two meetings with the Wali (governor) of North Darfur and the representative of the chairman of the Darfur Regional Authority in El-Fasher, during which aspects of cooperation and coordination were discussed.
Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the Chairman of the UNAMID, indicated that the signing of the Doha Peace Document last year has opened the door for the international community to take a closer look into the early recovery and development of the region which is an important step for achieving peace.
The British delegation concluded their visit to North Darfur by an inspection visit to Golu Dam, near El-Fasher, to stand on the progress of implementation of the work at the dam which is one of the projects funded by the British Department for International Development as part of the plan for the management of water resources in Darfur.
