Khartoum, March 28 (SUNA) - The Government of Sudan and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Fund (AFESD) Monday signed at Rotana Hotel in Khartoum two agreements of 360 million USD to be used for construction of a new Khartoum Airport and the Complex of Upper Atbara and Setet Dams in eastern Sudan
Funding of 175 million USD will be used for establishing the airport and other 175 million USD will be assigned for implementation of Complex of Upper Atbara and Setet Dams, while a sum of 10 million USD is a special grant for the water projects in eastern Sudan
The agreement was signed by the Director General/Chairman of the Board of Directors of the AFESD, Abdul-Latif Yousif Al-Hamad, and the Minister of Finance and National Economy, Ali Mahmoud Abdul-Rasoul, in the presence of former Ministers of Finance, Abdul-Wahab Osman, and Abdul-Rahim Hamdi
Addressing the occasion, the Minister of Finance and National Economy, Ali Mahmoud Abdul-Rasoul, commended the efforts of Al-Hamad and the contributions of the AFESD in support of Sudan toward the achievement of development in the states affected by conflicts, highlighting on the Fund's contributions to the implementation of Merowe Dam
The Minister gave a briefing about the relations between Sudan and the Fund since 1974 during, which some 45 projects were implemented through loan agreements and grants amounting to more than 1, 5 Billion USD
The minister highlighted on the importance of the projects of Upper Atbara and Setet Dams in increasing the cultivated lands and providing electricity, besides the new Khartoum Airport, expressing Sudan gratitude to the fund
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the AFESD, Abdul-Latif Yousif Al-Hamad expressed his pleasure over the fund's contribution to the implementation of the project of the new Khartoum Airport, besides the development of eastern Sudan
He revealed that the Fund pledged to extend some 200 million US dollars for road projects in eastern Sudan
