Khartoum, Aug. 9 (SUNA)- Chairman of the Commission for the Referendum, Prof. Mohamed Ibrahim Khalil, has denied the reports circulated by some international mass media on a trend of the Commission for the Referendum to call on the Presidency of the Republic to postpone the referendum process
The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the Constitution stipulate that the referendum shall be conducted on January 9, 2011
Prof. Khalil said in a press statement Monday that postponement of the referendum is a political issue, while the mission of the Commission for the Referendum is a legal and constitutional one in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the Constitution and the Referendum Act
He said that the Commission for the Referendum has forwarded a memo to the Presidency of the Republic through which the commission called for more support to enable the commission to perform its task properly
He said that the Commission will commence its work as of next week from its headquarters in Riyadh quarter in Khartoum, which is near the premises of the National Elections Commission
Prof. Khalil pointed out that the Commission for the Referendum has made wide strides in forming the higher referendum committees in the southern states, adding that the commission is currently engaged in working out the budgets for holding the referendum process
He disclosed that the Commission for the Referendum has signed agreements with the United Nations, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the USAID for providing technical and logistic support for holding the referendum
